Managing Your Wet Lawn

The rain has not been shy in Michigan. Your lawn is likely soaked most days. Lawn care in the fall, when the grass is soaking wet due to rain or morning dew, is crucial for maintaining a healthy lawn. Here are some tips to help you care for your lawn under these conditions:

Wait for the Right Time to Mow

Avoid mowing your lawn when it's wet. Wet grass can easily clump together and clog your mower, making it difficult to achieve a clean cut. Wait until the grass dries out before mowing.

Keep Leaves and Debris Off the Lawn

Wet leaves can smother the grass and create an ideal environment for fungal growth. Use a leaf blower or a rake to keep leaves and debris off the lawn, especially if it's wet.

Aerate and Dethatch

If your lawn has issues with drainage or thatch buildup, fall is a good time to address these problems. Aerate the lawn to improve water penetration and reduce compaction. Dethatch if necessary to remove dead grass and debris.

Fertilize

Fall is an excellent time to fertilize your lawn. Choose a slow-release, granular fertilizer with a balanced NPK ratio (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Apply it when the grass is dry to ensure even distribution.

Overseed

If you have bare or thin spots in your lawn, overseeding in the fall can help fill in these areas. Wait for a dry period to overseed, and make sure to keep the newly seeded areas consistently moist until the grass is established.

Adjust Your Watering Schedule

If your lawn is already wet due to rain or morning dew, adjust your irrigation schedule accordingly. Overwatering in wet conditions can lead to fungal issues. Monitor your lawn's moisture levels and only water when necessary.

Prune Overhanging Trees and Shrubs

Trim back overhanging branches to allow more sunlight and airflow to reach your lawn. This can help the grass dry out more quickly and reduce the risk of fungal growth.

Prepare for Winter

Fall is the time to prepare your lawn for winter dormancy. Remove any debris, aerate, fertilize, and perform any necessary repairs to ensure your lawn can withstand the winter months.
